光通信発祥の地 石碑
東北大学第17代総長で、電気通信研究所所長（9代、11代）も務めた西澤潤一博士による光通信関連の先駆的な技術の研究・開発の業績を讃えて、元スタンレー電気社長の手島透氏によって建てられた石碑。 旧半導体研究所前（西澤記念資料室前）にもデザインおよび石材が異なる石碑が建てられている。
